Expertise

I begin a project by researching the subject thoroughly. If it's about an individual or a piece of technology, I seek interviews and primary sources to establish initial research and write an outline. Once I've outlined an angle and flow of the piece, I begin gathering other research materials, from online resources to books and periodicals. This approach served my work well for my Microsoft guides on How To Geek.

I seek out different perspectives and sources, like when I wrote about how AI systems were disrupting the way we work in 2023, including discussions with developers and testing specific models to broaden my understanding.

For interviews, I spend some time getting to know my subject and building rapport prior to the interview itself. For my 2018 piece on Nintendo homebrew, for example, I interviewed a dozen developers to help me learn the development process. In my interview with musician Brent Black (Brentalfloss), I chatted with him for several days prior to publishing the piece that ended up on Digg’s front page.

I work best with niche topics, but can write about everything from tech and history to home improvement, music, comics, and the unexpected. Aside from writing, researching, editing, and data analytics, I'm also a management professional, with over two decade’s experience managing, training, hiring, recruiting, doing inventory, and running a large-scale operation.

AI and LLMs are not currently part of my workflow and I do not wish to engage with the narrative/conversation/whatever surrounding the technology at this time.

Let's work together! Just send me an email.
